The WHALES held their Tuesday 17th May meeting at the last bastion of brewing freedom in Woodbridge, J. J. Bittings. We extend thanks to Mr. Cerami for his hospitality and wish him a Happy Birthday. On hand were Robert, Kris, Leo, Kim, Prez, Crazy John, SteveS, Luke, KeithS, Gary, Neal, SteveG, Gene.

Our AHA sanctioned Brew Bash, Site 142, was hosted by Keith and Donna Story on Saturday May 7th. On hand were Keith (of course), Prez, Orth, Gene, Leo, SteveG, Gary, Neal, Robert & Kris Bergmann and Tom & Patty Paff. Overall, we did 65 gallons of brew with Pils, Octoberfest, Hefe, Rauch, IPA, Braggot, Belgian Triples all included in the mix. All grains, extracts, big & small batches-this is a great opportunity to see how others set up and execute. Mrs. Story set up an amazing display of culinary treats which we skillfully washed down with a fine array homebrews. August of Bittings hooked us up with jumbo masons of both ale and lager yeast. Let’s show our appreciation by throwing a bottle or two his way after it’s conditioned. Next bash is Saturday November 5th so mark your calendar now!

The Buzz Off competition will be held this Saturday May 21st at the Iron Hill Brewery in West Chester PA. This is one of the Big Four comps the Whales sanction to earn HBOY points. Whales have 14 entries in 11 categories from 5 brewers. We shout our much love to Sue Aguero for lugging our entries to Keystone. For results check http://hbd.org/buzz

The Whales Picnic will be held June 11th at Possumtown Park in Piscataway at Noon. Bring enough food and brews to share. It is shaded grove (#1) with a gazebo. The park features a sand volleyball court, softball field, playground and, most importantly, restrooms. The town supplies us with a gas grille and a bag of toys/sport equip. to keep Crazy John out of our hair. Thanks to Donna for handling the reservations.

Mr. Prez and the first lady, along with the Baby Whales, will be at the National Homebrewer’s Conference June 16-18th in Baltimore. Congrats to Prez for his first place ribbon in Category 24 Meads. He now has a chance to pick up more HBOY points for another medal in the second round. Winners will be announced at the banquet on Saturday nite. Good Luck and we can‘t wait to hear a report of the goings on! http://www.beertown.org/events/hbc/index.html

The next Club Only Competition is in August and features category 16 Belgian/French Ales. The Sept/Oct COC is category 3 Euro Amber Lagers. By that we mean Viennas and Octoberfests. You gotta lager your lagers so you’d better get’em going soon. Use the new BJCP guidelines for specs.

$$$$$$Treasurer’s Report from Uncle Leo. We’ve got a balance of $724. We have allotted $75 for the purchase of ribs for the 6/11 picnic.

Gary proposed we get shirts made. He distributed some sample logos, catalogs and info sheets with pricing and shirt style ideas. There is an initial cost to digitize our logo and we agreed the club will incur this cost. Once the logo is on file, we can have it put on just about any item including shirts, hats & mugs. It seems likely we will have a choice of an embroidered golf shirt and/or sweatshirt. We will finalize our plans at the next meeting including styles, colors and pricing for dues paying members and non-members.

We had several Whales make donations of White Labs tubes. Vouchers can be earned through collecting tubes to get free yeast or fun prizes from Dr. White! If we collect enough of them, Chris White will scrape the barnacles off your hull.

Rather than move pounds of whole hops to SC, Mr. Tripka donated multiple bags of green to his Whale comrades. Some have been distributed at the Brew Bash and if you were fortunate enough to be at the meeting there was enough Northern Brewer to graze on for months. Thank you MT.

HBOY report: With gold in the first round of the Nationals, Prez has 14 points with a chance for more. Gene is second with 8, Gary is a close third with 6 and Leo and KeithS are tied with 5. The best news is we‘ve got 10 members who have logged points! These results include up to the Nationals first round excluding the Cider category which has not released the results yet. Next chance for points is the Buzz Off on Saturday. Close your eyes and imagine the brew-groupies you’ll get when you are crowned Whales Homebrewer of the Year.

The Flight

: SteveS brought his Apricot Wheat and Tripka donated a Dortmunder German Lager from South of the Border; both great summer beers. Luke served a slice of his Apple Pie Cider which is spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Uncle Leo poured a generous helpin’ of his Pub Bitter and Gary brought a Dunkel with a great banana nose. Gene shared his Scottish Ale and SteveS returned to the flight with a robust extract IPA. Rob & Kris closed the night with their Industrial Porter. Thanks to all who contributed.
