“Alright brain, I don’t like you and you don’t like me, so just get me through this exam so I can go back to killing you slowly with beer.”  -Homer Simpson
The WHALES held their Tuesday 17th  January meeting at J.J. Bittings, the malt’n’hop stop on the North Jersey Coast Line.  Thanks to  Mr. Cerami for not throwing us out (again). On hand were Prez, Crazy John, Luke, Neal, SteveG, Gary,  SteveS, Gene, Leo, Robert & Kristin,  MikeV, Paff and potential brewer Dave.  Where the hell is Maggs??
The Whales Holiday Party at The Office in Bridgewater was a lesson in malt debauchery.  With our hard earned funds we purchased many a pitcher of quality libations and tasty snacks.  Ten members in all took advantage of the afternoon festivities.
Our own Prez was presented with the Whales Homebrewer of the Year 2005 plaque to rousing applause of both members and brew-groupies.  Along with the engraved plaque embossed with his name, Prez also received a smart-looking mug sporting the Whales logo.
The War of the Worts XI is upon us.  Entries will be accepted from 1/28-2/11 only.   Prez is available to transport our entries to a drop-off.  Get them to his house by 2/10 as he’s going up on the last day.  This is one of the Big Four Whales sanctioned events that counts towards the 2006 Homebrewer of the Year Award.  This year will feature a separate BOS for meads.   Check out www.keystonehops.org/wotw/ for forms, rules and info on judging or stewarding.
The COC Belgian Strong Category 18 battle was on with four swordsman.  Gary and Prez offered Triples, Paff a Dubbel and Uncle Leo a Golden Strong.  After initial side-by-side tasting and voting, we had a two way tie.  In sudden death overtime our winner is…Paff’s Dubbel.    All swordsman get a HBOY point for entering, Paff gets an additional point for being selected with the chance for more points on the national level.
The next COC will be American Ales Category 10.  They will be judged at the March meeting and count for the ’06 HBOY.  Go to www.beertown.org for all the 2006 categories and dates.
Gary has assured us that the new set of Whales fatigue will be ready for the Feb meeting.
Cider Barrel update:  The 53 gallon oak barrel has not moved.  Get your carboy (and bottles) ready for March.
Uncle Leo’s Treasurer’s Report:  Our previous balance of $479.45 was reduced by the holiday party allocation.  Current balance now stands at $232.52 but will be on the rise with the new dues coming in.
When will the Whales guest brew at Heavyweight Brewing in Ocean Twp??  What Wee Heavy recipe will we use???  Will Tom Baker bless us with a guest appearance at the Feb meeting?  The suspense is driving us to drink.
With the hangover from last March having subsided, isn’t it time for a New and Improved NYC Pub Crawl?  Sharpen yer boots as it will be soon.
This year represents the 10th Anniversary of the club, so our annual picnic will be open to all members present and past.  It will most likely be in mid-July.
There is more talk going on about the Whales making the trek to Orlando to the National Homebrew Conference in June.  We’d have to bring lots-o-beer and come up with a theme to partake in the Friday Club Nite.
The Short Flight:
We began with a sample of the Laird’s cider project which rests comfortably in Luke’s basement. Young and crystal clear, this cider is really picking up those applejack tones.  We concluded with Rob’s Rauchbier, dark and yet light.
That’s all Folks!
