The WHALES Home Brewer of the Year (HBOY) program is meant to promote brewing excellence, BJCP literacy, and friendly competition. Each member is eligible to participate by entering their beer, mead and cider into sanctioned BJCP competitions. In addition to the WHALES specific HBOY program, many of the competitions in the list below are eligible for the Eastern PA Home Brewer of the Year (individual) and Keystone Cup (club)standings (which are open to out of state brewers as well). In a nutshell, the more beers you enter, the more chances you have to place and the combination of those two things will earn you points over the course of the year. The member with the most points at the end of the year wins the Whales Homebrewer of the Year!

(a)     Whales HBOY Eligible Events

1.       War of the Worts (EPHY and Keystone Cup) - February

2.       AHA National Homebrew Competition – April (1st and 2nd rounds separate)

3.       Buzz Off (EPHY)  - June

4.       Malt Madness (EPHY and Keystone Cup) Late August

5.       Valhalla - The Meading of Life (mead only) – October

6.       Split Rock – November (delete. Cancelled in 2009 and likely not returning)

7.       Stony Creek (EPHY) – November

8.        All AHA recognized Club-only-Competitions – All Year (max two entries per person per COC)

(b)    Points

·         1 point is granted for submitting a single entry to an eligible competition

·         2 points are granted for submitting multiple entries to an eligible competition (not applicable to COC)

·         1 point granted for the Club’s Choice for any COC entry.

·         1 additional point granted for each entry scoring 3rd place per eligible competition.

·         3 additional points granted for each entry scoring 2nd place per eligible competition.

·         5 additional points granted for each entry scoring 1st place per eligible competition.

·         3 additional points granted for an entry recognized as “best of show” per eligible competition.

For example, a brewer that submits two entries in which one wins 1st place and best of show, that brewer will receive 2 points for multiple entries, 5 points for the first place and 3 more points for best of show for a total of 10 points for that competition.

(c)     Team Brewers/Co Brewers

1.       Points are generally granted to an individual brewer. However, some members of the club may recognize themselves as a brewing team and may compete for HBOY as such. The limitation of this arrangement is that ALL entries must be noted as being co-brewed by that team and not a collection of entries from that team as individual brewers.

2.       Entries that are submitted by two brewers that have only come together for one or a few batches must list the entry as co-brewed unless one brewer willingly gives up credit (the co brewers should work this out prior to sending the entry). Non-team, Co-brewed entry and placing points are split by the co brewers equally in the HBOY scorecard. If the co-brewers determine that their individual shares of the finished product are noticeably different (by chance or intentional variables), they may each enter and receive HBOY points as individuals. For example, one mash/boil that is split and fermented with different yeasts in different environments would qualify as different beers. Another example would be fermented product that is later racked onto fruit or otherwise substantially modified.

(d)    Club Brewing Projects

1.       Club brewing projects are defined as those solicited to the club as generally available to anyone who wants to participate (although some projects are first come first served with limited space).

2.       As far as competitions are concerned, the end product of these projects represents a club effort. No single shareholder shall enter the beer as their own creation unless it has substantially been modified as mentioned above.

3.       No HBOY points shall be awarded for entry or placement.

4.       The project coordinator should coordinate with the shareholders as to who will send an entry to any given competition. The president should be kept in the loop as well.

5.       The entrant name for a given competition will be whoever volunteered to send their share of the product, but the “co-brewer” must be specified as “The WHALES”.

6.       All entry costs, including shipping if applicable (no "overnight/next day" shipping), shall be reimbursed by the club treasurer and as such any prizes awarded shall become property of the club.

(e)     Winner

The brewer or brewing team with the most points at the end of the year is awarded the title of WHALES home brewer(s) of the year.

Note: Any questions or concerns regarding these rules should be directed to the Steering Committee.
