The Woodbridge Homebrewers Ale and Lager Enthusiast Society

The WHALES is an AHA registered homebrewing club based out of Central New Jersey. The club aquired its 60th member in  October 2009 which marks the largest membership in its 13 year history. Despite the beer-centric name, the club is also equally involved in the production of mead (fermented honey), ciders and wines. The club promotes an ongoing education of various brewing techniques through brewer presentations (both peer members and professional brewers alike). Membership is also encouraged to develop their palettes through regular tastings of home brewed and commercial examples of all the BJCP recognized styles. Many of the members regularly achieve at least bronze medals in regular brewing competitions and a WHALES cider project even took a gold medal at the 2009 NHC. While most of the activities are geared towards promoting and growing the home brewing hobby, it remains a great social network for folks who share at least one passion; taking a hands-on approach to the beverages we love.

JJ Bitting Brewpub LogoJJ Bittings brewpub (Main Street) in Woodbridge, NJ has been the WHALES home base and meeting location for about 10 years. We are grateful to have such generous hosts. Regular club meetings occur the 3rd Tuesday night of every month at 8pm. Depending on the agenda and the number tastings we do, most members filter out by 10:30pm. Official business usually takes an hour or so.

The club also meets for club projects at various members’ homes and has been known to move a meeting or two to a surrounding brewpub for a temporary change of scenery and an excuse to drink more beer.

Membership consists of people from all walks of life, all ages (21+ of course), and many areas of professional expertise. We’re happy to say that we also have two BJCP certified judges in our midst.

The 2008 Whales Flanders Project

NOTE: As the club grows in size, it's especially important for new visitors to introduce yourselves to someone so that you're not lost in the shuffle. It would really help to show up at about 7:45 before the bulk of the membership arrives.

NEW! For those of you who do not have interest in joining the club but would still like to be informed for WHALE events, news and major website updates, we have created a Friends of the WHALES mailing list.

The WHALES encourage you to please enjoy homebrew responsibly. For more information about alcohol consumption, please visit the CDC website.

Nick's Club Only Kudos

As many of you recall from the January meeting, Nick Fox won club's choice for his Mild in the Club Only Competition. For most of these, the club's choice is usually the last time you hear about the beer. We're happy to find out that Nick's beer took a SILVER at the National level this time.

Pub Review - Coppermine Pub (North Arlington, NJ)

E-mail Print PDF

I met Vito, owner of the Coppermine Pub at a W.H.A.L.E.S. meeting a few months ago.  First off, let me thank him for showing interest in our club and taking the time to come and get to know us.

I visited the Coppermine Pub around 6:30pm on a Saturday in December.  The initial draw that brought me there was a tapping of a rare Dogfish Head/Sierra Nevada collaboration Life and Limb cask, which to my dismay, but not surprise, was kicked about 45 minutes after it was tapped.  So, I was left to take in the feel of the bar without that coveted dark strong ale, replacing it with a fine Spaten Holiday Bock.  It had the same delightful crispness I’ve come to expect from a German holiday bock, but with a touch more on the malt end.

Some bars tend to cramp up in the barstool areas for a variety of reasons, and I find something really nice about the frill free, open space feel as you walk through the door.  A full bar awaits you on the left seating a dozen or so patrons, and no worries mixed drink set, the bar is fully stocked with spirits.  Pan center to see glorious open area with linoleum footrests with a nicely stocked jukebox sitting against the back wall, and finishing off the scene, four tables to the right with seating for roughly 28.  The walls are covered with some nice brewerania both old and new, and of course, the prerequisite for the everyday Joe to walk in to a bar, two decent sized televisions by the bar and two by the tables.

The feel of this bar is that there are no special nooks or hiding spots, no games, or food for that matter.  It’s an open-faced bar that’s all right there in front of you the minute you walk in.  As far as I’m concerned, the Coppermine Pub located on the corner of Ridge Rd. in North Arlington, NJ is a fine little bar with reasonable prices and a great tap and bottle list, which is followed up with a friendly and knowledgeable staff to guide anyone along their craft beer journey.
